"So then, Thomas Kelsoe, what shall I do with you? I feel that I am close to death, and you (though you did not intend to) have given me a gift. In turn, I shall bestow upon you a gift. Or maybe a curse."
"I will place my hand upon your head, and you will receive an immense headache. You will sleep, and when you wake up you will have a near-immortal life. You shall be impervious to pain. I do not know how long you can live. I do know that your ability to heal will lessen over the years until you finally pass from the earth. I advise you to pursue an anonymous existence. Do not place yourself in harm's way, and you may live for thousands of years."
"The second part of the gift involves querying the deceased. If you touch a cadaver or are in the presence of the dead, as in a graveyard, you will be able to reach out in your thoughts to speak to the deceased. The gift never fails, but you must know that being summoned to communicate causes the deceased person immense discomfort."
Sir Ammit placed his hand upon my forehead, and I felt a jolt of pain, followed by the urge to sleep. When I woke up, Ammit was propped against the dozer, dead, with his eyes wide open. I needed to retrieve his identification so that I would have proof of his death.
