Inquisitor of the Dead, Part 2

Losses on both sides were heavy, and the Germans withdrew the next day. The day after that, our people moved west. My assignment called for me to remain at my location, so that's what I did.

The next day at noon, I heard the rumble of a U.S. jeep. I observed quickly that it was a captured vehicle. It contained a driver and one General Field Marshal Boris Ammit. The driver stopped long enough for the man to get out of the vehicle. It then departed.

The spy was in my sights. I leaped from the bullet-ridden bulldozer with the previous operator's Thompson machine gun in my hand. It was light, so I knew immediately that it was almost out of ammunition. Nevertheless, I aimed the weapon and emptied the clip at Boris Ammit. I know I hit him, but he seemed unaffected by the gunfire.

I dropped the Thompson and pulled my sidearm. Once again, I hit him, and he seemed unfazed. I dropped my firearm and produced my knife.
