Poke Salad
Poke Salad - Author's Picture

Poke salad is called pokeweed, poke sallet (Fr.), and a few other names. Its scientific name is Phytolacca americana. Poke salad is good to eat when the young leaves can be picked (leaves only, the rest of the plant is toxic). Even the young leaves have to be properly prepared. They must be boiled for 15 minutes, and this must be repeated about four times. The above picture shows an old (not edible) plant.

Some people like to serve poke salad with scrambled eggs and wild onions. Some fry it in bacon grease. It has been several years since I last ate any. The image above shows just a couple of plants that happen to be growing by the dog's pen. There wasn't enough to pick, even when the plants were small. I will include a link to an article on Wikipedia below. Poke salad is an interesting plant.

Today has been another painful day, with my back hurting more often than not. I've done some laundry today, dishes, and fed the dogs. I don't feed the dogs until late in the evening, primarily because it's too hot outside. Over the last week, the temperature has been getting close to and even above 100 degrees.

For dinner tonight I made tacos; I served the prepared taco "fixin's" with homemade fry bread. I can make some delicious fry bread; everyone here loves it. I have one piece left over, and I think I'm going to eat it with some honey or maybe peanut butter and syrup.

I've been looking into building a new shelf to sit on the top of my desk. It already has shelves, but I think I could build an add-on that'll fit quite nicely. I've been adding more Star Wars collectibles to the top of the desk. I foresee that I'll need at least one more, one more for this year, anyway.
