USS Cyclops

The disappearance of the USS Cyclops has always been one of my favorite mysteries of the sea. The picture was taken in 1911 while the ship was in the Hudson River, and it went missing in March, 1918. The Cyclops was a collier (a coal-carrying ship). It was 542 feet in length.

According to one sailor, the Captain of the Cyclops was an absolute cad, an officer for sure but sort of sketchy on the gentleman part. The Cyclops was lost with all hands in the Bermuda Triangle. The loss of the ship and its crew remains the largest loss of life in the US Navy not connected with warfare. The entry at Wikipedia is a good source of information for this ship:
