Brianna exited the bedroom a few minutes later. I knew then that she had done something to me. I originally wondered if she had drugged me somehow, but now I attribute my immobility to her presence.
She stood before me, beautiful as ever, and smiled. It was then that I saw her bloody fangs, still extended. She spoke.
"The cheater no longer breathes. I do not forget or forgive. Wolves howl and devour the weak. My kind devours whosoever we please. Now, I will offer you one chance: Forget what you saw here. Just leave it alone. Leave it alone, or you may be next. I can end your days as easily as you can snap a twig. Or I could do worse; I could infect you with my own curse. The life of a vampire is fraught with dread and fear."
Brianna left me and walked to the door. She looked back for a moment, and one spoke final time. "I advise you to leave. Otherwise, you may be speaking to the police."
She didn't have to tell me twice. I finally found my phone and then left. So much for "best friends," I suppose. I was just scared.
Steven was found later by police who were doing a welfare check. I don't know how it was accomplished, but his passing was determined to be caused by alcohol poisoning. Being drained of blood was not mentioned; perhaps Brianna had something to do with the coroner's report. I don't know how much influence she has in the local medical profession.
I don't know if Brianna still works at the hospital. I don't know if she's even in town these days. I do know that I don't want to know. It was the worst Christmas that I ever had.
