| The Visitor |
Tom didn't seem to be doing too well at all. He spoke but he was unintelligible. I distinctly remember seeing the cane that he sometimes used for his sciatica. It was basically a hollow metal tube that was adjustable. It was broken in half.
We were taken by ambulance to the nearest hospital, where we were triaged. Ellie and I were in better shape than Tom, but we were all determined to be the most in need of medical attention. We were taken to separate rooms.
Tom was the priority. I remember him looking at me before he was wheeled away, and, in a moment of clarity, he spoke directly to me, "Don't worry pal, I'll see you in a few days."
Ellie and I were checked out and had to stay overnight for observation. Both of us were released the next day. We were both sore but mobile.
