Captain's Log, March 13

Fossil
Author's Picture

I found the small fossil outside earlier, on top of the ground, while I was putting a sticker on the car. It's surprisingly complete. I usually don't pick them up if they're not in good shape.

I remember being at Medical City in the Dallas area several years ago. I had walked down to get a soda and got behind a girl who was also there to get a drink. She was probably about 16. I remember thinking her mini-skirt was odd; I thought they were out of style, whatever. When I got there, she had put her money into the machine and was trying to figure out how to get it back because she didn't have enough money. I looked at the machine and it showed that she only lacked a quarter. I told her I'd take care of that, and I handed her the coin. She was so appreciative and thankful. I remember thinking that it was nice to find someone who is polite.

In 13 days, I will be headed back to that hospital. I met and spoke to many different and interesting people while I was there those several times. I wonder what will happen this time? I hope we have a good experience at the hospital and while travelling. Now I guess we're getting a hotel room on the night before the surgery. I can't help but worry about crime. I mean, I don't have a new vehicle, but still.

I've completed the process of adding my e-book to the blog. I enjoyed writing it and posting it. I recognize that it's an amateur effort, but like I said elsewhere, if I'm happy with it, that's all that matters. I thought about adding graphic headers to every story page, but decided that it's too time consuming, not really worth the effort, and it's not really done anymore. At least I don't think it is. Those types of headers remind me of the old GeoCities days. I did, however, make a graphic for the Washita pages. I couldn't resist. Maybe I'll do a few more in the future, if I get bored. Any graphics that I use will be partially AI-generated and also made with MS Paint.

I've pored over each page of the e-book and fixed the errors that I found. Most occurred when I was copying from the EPUB version. I'll still read them from time to time to see if I find additional mistakes. Sometimes I added transcription notes and it's possible that I could have accidentally published them. If you find an error and want to be helpful, you can let me know about it.

I created an entire mythology for my book. Not all of the stories are connected to it, but many use the same character names and place names. I'm making a similar "universe" (with some of the same names and themes) for the short stories I write for the blog. They take place in a fictional Dobbs County, Texas.

The e-book is described next:

The Graveyard Shift - This one is newer than the others. It involves the staff of a nursing home.

Bodarc Academy - Also new, this time about a haunted college.

Car 13 - A third new story inspired by a dangerous hill near the place where I grew up.

The Light in Zedediah McCumber’s Chicken House - Based on some local lore about a haunted chicken house.

Crawlspaces - I had the basic outline for this one completed several years ago. It's about, naturally, what's beneath the house.

Dan Smith - This story is also based on local lore. Told by my family as a supposedly true story.

Debutante - A new story largely based on my interest in ghouls.

Enid - Another new story about the narrator's strange experience in the hospital.

Gene - Another new story about a helpful mechanic.

Object 137 - A haunted item and the trouble it causes.

Poltergeist - Based on family lore about an old rent house.

Sanctuary - A new story about the narrator's search for a monster.

The Disappearance of Adam Lawrence - Inspired by my early memories of the days when school would close due to snow.

The Haunted Bridge - This story is inspired, in part, by local folklore.

The Incident at Pine Hills Mounds - Black-eyed kids and other shenanigans. I started writing this story years ago. The original was lost when my computer failed.

The Piedmont Performance - Evidently it's a monster-making machine. This weird story came, largely, from my dreams and especially nightmares.

The Seat of Honor - A casino experiences strange deaths.

The Stagecoach - A twist on some local folklore near the place where I was born.

The Strangle Tale of Leonard Peck - An expanded version of a family myth, supposedly true.

Unification Cemetery - Another story based on local folklore.

Washita - This novellete was also years in the making. The original draft and outline were lost when my computer failed.

'Tis the Season - A tale of Christmas, Yule, Odin, and the Wild Hunt. This one is also partly inspired by nightmares.
