Joe, Part 2

Joe
Joe

The two men would often chat and they became friends. My boyfriend, a big talker, always pined for a more populous area and a better job. Mr. Joe, a widower, always talked about his deceased wife, his children, and his grandchildren.

One night Mr. Joe didn't come in for lunch. This was no reason to worry, as he didn't always eat lunch at the store. Occasionally he would bring a sack lunch.

When he didn't show up a second night, my boyfriend was a little worried, but not overly concerned. It was raining and dreary, but he could see Mr. Joe's guard shack in the distance and the lights were on.

When Mr. Joe didn't show up the third night, my boyfriend was worried but again decided it was due to the weather. It was cold and we were enduring a rainy November. If it were him, my boyfriend thought, he wouldn't be too eager to drive across the road in a roofless cart.

On the fourth night, it had stopped raining. The cemetery gates swung open, but the golf cart didn't appear. Mr. Joe stepped through the gates, and they closed behind him. Then, in full view of my boyfriend, Mr. Joe turned around and seemed to walk straight through the gate. After a few moments, the guard shack lights were turned off.
