Lamassu, Part 6

Lamassu
Lamassu - Source: Internet

Suddenly, there was the sound of rocks. It seemed impossible, but the sound came from the opposite side of Miller's Ravine. Somehow, while carrying Ben in its mouth, the thing had managed to descend into the ravine and make its way to the top of the opposite side.

"Thing" is how Clint would describe the monster for the rest of his days. The thing was definitely a thing that should not exist. It was dark gray with long fur, and if had been as large as a horse, it had changed into something much larger. It was as large as four horses. It had the body of a muscular bull, bird wings, and the horrible head - and mouth - of a long-haired human female.

Worst of all was that terrible head. With angry eyes it glared at Clint and Aaron before it disappeared into the tree line. In its too-large mouth, it carried the limp body of Benjamin Evans.

The boys made it home after agreeing that they would not mention the thing they saw that day. No one knew they had been there. No one knew they were together on that day. They kept their secret for many years. Tim, of course, was eventually reported missing. The case went cold, and his two friends were never suspected. No one would believe them if they told the truth.

Since Clint started college in Dobbs City, he has sneaked, occasionally, into Miller's forest. With his pistol holstered, he makes his way across the field and scans the ravine. He hunts the thing that he knows to be there.

Clint studies language, anthropology, and comparative mythology. It didn't take him long to make the obvious discovery. The thing he saw that day, except for the woman's head and its mouth, was almost identical to what the ancient Assyrians referred to as a Lamassu. His interest in "mythological" creatures only increased, and now he suspects that many such creatures might actually exist.
