Red River

Red River
Red River - Author's Picture

I took a road trip through northeast Texas to visit the Red River, which I had been told was out of its banks. The Red River is a place I have been to before, long ago, to do some fishing. It is the natural boundary between Texas and Oklahoma. Oklahoma actually "owns" the river.

I couldn't tell anything about the water until I drove across the Red River bridge. Then the overflowing river could clearly be seen, but I couldn't drive and take a picture simultaneously. Instead, I pulled in on the Texas side to see if I could get a better view.

I couldn't get a better view. There was too much plant growth and, truth be told, I was afraid to get much closer. I've always heard tales of how dangerous the river is, and how it's not unheard of for the bank to collapse, sending people to their doom.

The one picture that I managed to take doesn't show much. The river is barely noticeable in the background. The stream in the foreground is named Big Pine Creek. It's a tributary of the river. The pathway seen in the picture is, I think, a boat launching area.
