The Fate of Akna, Part 2
Captives were removed from the prison on a daily basis. Sometimes one, and sometimes two. Those who were removed did not return. All were frightened. Then came the day that they came for Akna.
From Akna's prison, within walking distance (though a long walk it would be), a structure could be seen. It was a temple or a step pyramid of some kind. One morning, Akna was removed from the stone cell. From that moment, the dark edifice commanded her attention.
Akna was immediately accosted by three of her captors, two of whom brandished obsidian-tipped spears. A third attached a chain to her neck, and she was jerked in the direction of the pyramid. Adrenaline surged through her body, and it made for a short trip.
Akna, terrified, was led to the top of the temple. The nobles of the Sun Tribe were gathered there, along either side of an altar. A priest, disrobed above the waist and wearing an odd headdress of feathers, was speaking. "Yom Kimil," said the man, "Receive into the outer darkness this sacrifice that has been brought to you."
The girl was forced, quite unceremoniously, onto her back and on top of the altar. Tied and unable to even struggle, her fate came quickly. Her breasts were exposed, and the priest murdered her with an obsidian blade. Her heart was removed in two quick steps. The body was then flung down the steps at the rear of the temple, and the remains landed in the tall grass below.
