Dobbs Institute, 16 Years Later - Tiffany Williamson, Part 9
That evening, instead of going home as she often did, Tiffany visited her father in his office. He was not surprised by her appearance. She sometimes visited him after school. He did stop and pause when she asked about the "debutante ball." He spoke.
"Traditionally, or maybe historically, a ball was held and attended by young ladies who were coming of age in society. The event introduced them to the public. It's an old-fashioned term and isn't used too much these days. Here, the school ball is simply an event attended by young ladies who have completed their course of studies and are ready to move on from Dobbs Institute. Where they go from here is their choice. Some may join the workforce, and some may continue their education elsewhere. It's not limited to the ladies, either. At our Institute, it's just a name. The young gentlemen are more than welcome to attend - and they do. Almost all of our graduating students do. It's little more than a semi-formal gathering or party, or maybe a prom. If you want to know more, I advise you to ask Izzy - she probably knows more about it than I do."
"Will I have to attend such an event?" Tiffany asked.
"Of course not. As always, it'll be your choice. I've never required you to do anything, and I don't intend to start now. Well, other than your schooling. We can't have a mysterious daughter who never leaves home now, can we?"
"I suppose not..." Tiffany trailed off with her speech.
