The Visitor, Part 6

The Visitor
The Visitor

Merry Christmas

As the man arrived at the end of the driveway, Simon saw him lift his staff high, and then slam it onto the ground. Instantly, a glyph that looked like a capital "X" appeared above the doors of several houses. These houses, Simon would later say, were the same ones that had turned the strange man away on the previous day.

As soon as the symbol appeared, it is said, the marked homes burst into flames. Those who happened to be outdoors also burned, almost immediately turning into ashes. The entire area, save for the Kelso home, burned.

That same night, Priscilla retired to the bedroom which she had shared, for years, with Jonah. She was preparing to go to bed when she felt an odd sensation. Jonah then appeared and spoke to her.

"My beloved," said he. "You have far exceeded me. Thank you for showing kindness to old 'One Eye.' He is not as merciful as some are. I know that you have been seeking those things in which I invested when I was alive. I want you to know that twelve paces south of the oak tree in our front yard, you will find over one million dollars' worth of gold. I buried it there about ten years ago. When you recover it, you'll never worry again about money. This is all that I can do for you until we meet again."

The phantom vanished, and Priscilla went to bed. The next day, she summoned Simon and swore him to secrecy. He agreed, and she told them about the visit of Jonah. When everyone left to go their separate ways, Jonah, armed with a shovel, dug at the place specified by his father. About two feet down, he found a locked box. When opened, he and his mother discovered gold bricks and coins. As Jonah had stated, it was a fortune. From that point forward, until she finally passed away, Mrs. Kelso never lacked for wealth. She never needed anything. She passed away at the age of 82 and left behind a great inheritance for her kinsmen.
