"Sir Christian is asleep at the moment, deep inside the sub-basement of this house. You will see him tonight after sunset. You are speaking to me because my Lord has commanded it. You see, Maximus intends to reside in this part of the country, and he requires a female companion. He wants you to fulfill that role, and he asks that you give him an answer."
"By the way," the Emissary continued, "is your neck sore? May I see it? Do you have any idea what has happened to you?"
"Yes." Amelia showed her neck, pointing to an injury. The Emissary could still see the bruising. "What has happened to me?"
"I cannot fully elaborate; Sir Christian will explain it to you. I can give you the short, condensed, version. My Lord was born with a certain medical condition that does not allow him to survive in the light of day. He has been this way for the many years that I have served him. He has many talents that you will find impossible to believe right now. For instance, I don't look a day over 25 years old, but I am approaching my 100th birthday. My condition is a gift from Sir Christian. It was granted to me when I became the Emissary."
"Sir Maximus can bestow many things upon those he cares for. He can slow one's aging process. He can grant the ability to transform oneself into a coyote or a wolf. He can grant one the ability to assume the appearance of smoke. He can even project thoughts into the minds of others."
