Mayapples

Mayapples
Mayapples - Author's Picture

I think I took this picture in the spring of 2024. One day, long ago, I was walking through some heavy woods. I came upon a clearing and found myself in the midst of a colony of strange plants. They turned out to be mayapples or American mandrake. They are both medicinal and poisonous. The fruit, which is supposed to ripen in May (naturally) is said to be edible, but I have doubts. I plucked one and smelled of it. It smelled awful - definitely not something you'd want to eat. There's a really good article about it on Wikipedia.
