The Closet, Part 1

The Closet
The Closet

My name is Ernest Duncan, and I attend the Mackstone Institute in Dobbs, Texas. I moved to Dobbs in 2023, having previously resided at the home of my mom and dad. They live in Hillston, Oklahoma. I am currently 20 years old.

Edward and Martha Clarke are old friends of my family. They live in Dobbs and, fortunately (or so I thought), they offered to let me stay in a room in their house. It is an immaculate Victorian home, well-maintained with a gorgeous yard that has won several town-sponsored awards for its appearance.

I mostly knew the Clarkes from my friendship with Trevor Clarke, their son. He and I had been friends for many years. It was his old room that I moved into, as he had enrolled in a college some distance away.

The bedroom was large and well-appointed. Finely constructed nightstands with what looked like antique lamps were on both sides of the bed. It had a queen-sized bed, and a large television mounted on the wall. There was also an attractive dresser with an oval mirror, and there was still enough leftover space to move my desk into the room.

Other than the lamps, a few more things were obviously antiques. Victorian-style picture frames were on the wall. A (very clean) chamber pot sat on a shelf, as did a large pitcher and bowl set. Mrs. Clarke was kind enough to store all these things in their attic. She said, "You ought to be able to decorate your room as you see fit."
