Not Plowed Ground

Feral Pigs Rooting
Not Plowed Ground - Author's Picture

I took this picture in September of 2024. The ground sort of looks like it has been worked, but this is actually the work of feral pigs. The ground has been badly damaged. It's almost impossible to mow spots in the yards that are damaged like this. Even mowing pastures with a tractor is difficult. I've seen guys cutting hay, and they'll avoid spots like these, which can be extensive.

According to Texas Parks & Wildlife, pigs were introduced to the continental United States by Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1539. They are now running rampant, with an estimated population of well over two million. You can learn more about this here.
