The Transition of Camilla Beckwith, Part 2

Camilla Beckwith
The Transition of Camilla Beckwith

Jane took her leave, and Camilla pondered a potential meeting with her kinsman, who she did not know. In fact, it was likely that she would never know him or even see him since she was confined to her room. Perhaps she would, or perhaps the Beckwith luck would rear its head once again. Luck was a fickle thing.

The day came and went like all others, but then something out of the ordinary happened. Jane's approach was detected. She stopped and rapped upon Camilla's door. Lord William Dunwich of the Beckwith family had arrived, and he had come calling on Camilla.

When Jane departed, the heavy steps of a man could be heard climbing the stairs. It was indeed Lord Dunwich. He had come to see Camilla, he said, after having heard of her illness.

After an hour or so of conversation, Dunwich did something unexpected. Camilla had no idea how he got the door open. It was almost instantaneously accomplished: First he was outside, then he was in the room. His first words, once inside, were an assurance that Camilla should not be worried, for he was not there to harm her, and he was quite immune to any plague she might carry.
