Homecoming, Part 9

Homecoming
Homecoming

I don't remember our "small talk," but I was surprised to hear that he knew a great deal about me and my connection to Haven Cemetery. He revealed to me that his "higher-ups" knew that I had placed cameras in the cemetery. He then advised me that I had two options: delete the contents that I had captured on my cameras, or law enforcement would do it for me.

Thomas Watts told me directly to forget anything I saw on my cameras. Then he said something that chilled me to my core. "I know you've seen the blue fog. It is not an aberration, young man. Beware, for to you, it is a call to familial unity. And Aghul? Aghul is Russian, of course. But your family history extends much farther into the past. You come from Arabic stock. You are not Aghul. You and yours are Al Ghul. Do you know what that means? Well, you have the internet, so look it up. Your ancestors changed the family name when they left the clans." He then whispered, "But you cannot change who you are. You should know that it's your family that disturbs those who are buried."

Thomas Watts left me shocked, disturbed, and shaken. I certainly didn't look anything up on the internet. Instead, I went home and immediately called the sheriff and the Dobbs City News. I was told that neither entity employed nor had even heard of Thomas Watts. I was sick and fearful for the rest of that day and the day that followed.

Revelations and Going Home

The things I saw on the game cameras don't trouble me as much as they once did. I wasn't in danger. Well, not as much as I thought. Perhaps, I thought to myself, I had finally discovered the real reason for my supposedly deficient mental health.

I later took a walk in the blue fog, down toward the cemetery. There was the sound of digging. I was not afraid.

The earth erupted near a fresh grave. I watched as a...thing...burst forth and brought a good portion of a casket up with it. It did not fear me, and it was not aggressive. I drew closer. It was almost human in its appearance, but it was clearly a beast out of a nightmare.

"I am Al Ghul," I said.
