| The Vision |
I thought the woman would be, like the male soldiers, dressed in a PT ("physical training") uniform. However, she wore a blouse and an olive drab skirt, along with military headgear. I could see some sort of insignia on her blouse. It was polished brass, but I couldn't see well enough to tell what it was. It appeared to be an officer's insignia.
She was leaning over the balcony rail as if looking at or for something. Her hair was blonde, exceptionally long, and beautiful. She was the most beautiful sight that I'd ever seen.
She didn't appear to be doing anything but enjoying her coffee. I can't remember if she looked my way. Perhaps she did. Maybe she didn't. As mentioned, she seemed primarily fixated on something on the ground.
I was struck by her beauty. I couldn't wait to see her again the next morning. I even entertained the thought of trying to get her attention. It was a foolish thought, of course. Who would approach a strange woman, who might be married or even an officer in the army?
I did nothing, but that evening I did ask a sergeant if he knew anything about the female barracks right next to us. He looked at me like I had lost my mind. He said, "Sir, those billets are empty."
