After I had settled in, my girlfriend Hailee moved in. We shared the master bedroom, and she set about to decorate and redecorate as she pleased. Before long, the house displayed evidence of a woman's touch.
About a month after Hailee moved in, she told me one night at dinner that she was concerned about something. Occasionally, at night, she thought she heard footsteps on the top floor. I was working nights at that time and hadn't heard anything, but I had no reason to disbelieve her. I had already sensed that something was strange about the house, but I hadn't mentioned it to her. To set her mind (and mine) at ease, I thoroughly examined the rooms on the top floor. I found nothing. I even went into the attic. There was nothing. There were no squatters or anyone else in the house.
In two weeks, Hailee went onto the night shift at work, and I went on days. We both worked for the same company; such shift changes were common and never permanent. For now, I would work during the day and sleep at night.
Sleeping at night was the goal, but it didn't take long for me to hear the sounds that Hailee heard. Footsteps: Continuous. Someone appeared to be pacing in the bedroom directly above my bedroom. Back and forth. Back and forth.
Cautiously, I crept up the stairs and stepped onto the landing. Thankfully, it was not a creaky landing. I still heard footsteps. I then made my way to the third bedroom and threw the door open. The footsteps ceased. No one was in the room.
