The Village Idiot, Part 1

The Village Idiot
The Village Idiot

Tobar lived in the village of Seaside. His parents passed away from illness when he was a baby. His first years on earth were normal, but as he began to grow it became apparent that he seemed to be different. Not different in a good way, but "slow." The people began calling him Tobar, which was their word for an unproductive water well.

He was called Tobar, "Empty," by most of the villagers because they compared his senses to a dry well. Few, except for the woman who raised him - his grandmother - had much to do with the boy. They all secretly laughed at him, and they pitied his poor grandmother.

Another person who did not laugh at Tobar was Ninekur. He was the already influential son of the tribe's chieftain. He was fond of Tobar, and he was the main reason that the people laughed in secret rather than openly. Ninekur took an interest in Tobar and his grandmother. He was a protector, like his father. He made sure that the old woman had everything she required to live a good life.

Natu was an older man in the village and was likewise derided by the villagers, though less so than Tobar. Natu did have enough sense to construct his own dwelling, and his needs were provided for by the village folk. He spent his days collecting coconuts, repairing nets, supplying obsidian arrowheads, and engaging in commercial fishing. These things were exchanged for everything he might want or need from the villagers. Natu was a kind soul. In times of scarcity, the old man made sure that no one went without food.
