"What grabbed him? Slow down and tell me what's wrong."
"Okay," he panted. "Just catching my breath. Ben and I saw a deer - we thought it was a deer, but it didn't run from us. As you know, that doesn't happen. Deer will just about always run from humans."
"But this one didn't?"
"No. It followed us, so we thought it might be sick or something. We armed ourselves with two branches and tried to shoo it off. And it did run, but only a little way. It stopped near a big pine tree and seemed to disappear."
"Okay. Keep your cool. Then what happened? It disappeared behind a tree, you say?"
"It seemed to disappear behind the tree. But that's not possible. Me and Ben exchanged looks, and that's when the deer thing peeked out at us! From behind the tree!"
