"How did it 'get' Ben?"
"I told him to run for it. I don't think he understood. I ran away, but he ran toward the thing with the branch. I think he thought we were both charging toward it. Then he screamed. When I turned around, the deer had changed somehow. It was as big as a horse. but it had stripes like a big cat and long, sharp fangs. Its tail was long and looked something like a spear. Its head and mouth were so large - huge! It dragged Ben away into the brush toward Miller's clearing. I ran, and then I stumbled into you."
Aaron reached into his pocket and produced a fair-sized pocket folding knife. "Keep this in case you need it," he said."Okay," said Clint. "Now, let's figure out what we're going to do."
Aaron had more experience than Clint in this section of the forest. "I don't think we can do anything right now, except maybe head for the clearing. And try to be quiet as we walk."
