Professor Jim Duncan was suspicious of the female stranger at the faculty Christmas party. He had been warned by his colleagues that she might come. He was also told that he should be prepared to take action. The words "vampire" and "ghoul" had been mentioned, so he had to be extra careful.
He was annoyed and very tired. He wanted nothing more than to enjoy his evening. All he wanted was some more red wine from a certain local vineyard. He refilled his glass and attempted to focus on relaxing with his peers.
The organization with which he was associated might want him to waste the evening looking for spooks, but he wanted nothing more than to finish the evening and return home. Well, there was a bit of paperwork that needed to be attended to, but other than that, he just wanted a drink. And then he wanted to go home to the Victorian mansion that the school so generously supplied for him. When he made it home, he intended to drink more wine. And rest.
Then, she walked into the dining hall. She was certainly beautiful. She was a slim, pale, raven-haired woman. She looked young enough to be a student, but she dressed in clothing that made it obvious that she possessed some amount of wealth. Or perhaps her parents were wealthy. Whatever the case, she wore an attractive dress that came just below the knee, and on her feet were black boots. The professor thought they looked much like combat boots.
Professor Duncan lost sight of the woman after a few minutes. It was almost like she had never been there, but he had all the information he needed - it was her. Finally deciding that he could not seek out someone who was no longer present, he bade farewell to a select few colleagues and left the room.
