"There is so much for you to learn and decide, but I'll give you the simple version. You have been chosen to be one of my aides. You can live a fairly normal life if you consume my blood regularly. If you choose not to, I'll drain you dry, and you will enter into eternity. If you choose to live, you will receive many benefits. Your lifespan will increase - it's not uncommon for a familiar to live many lifetimes."
"I'll leave you now. But consider my words. Life and privilege, or death. It's up to you." With that, the vampire departed, and the doctor was left alone.
Jim pondered becoming a familiar. Was a long life worth acting as a servant to the undead? Jim didn't know. What he did know, by default, was that he would perish one way or the other.
He decided to wait until Abigail's next appearance. Then he would refuse her offer. No doubt she would attack him, but that was his mission in this life. She didn't know about his Factor XIII Deficiency. The Company had already determined that Jim's fatal condition would be passed on to the vampire.
When Abigail fed upon Duncan, she would be ensuring her death. Duncan smiled as he realized his ultimate escape would soon be upon him. He made himself comfortable in his cell, determined to sleep well on his final night on God's earth.
For Doctor Jim Duncan's incredible act of selflessness, he was honored with a street in Dobbs City called Jim Duncan Boulevard. The Dobbs Institute's Duncan Credit Development Bank, which funds the Institute's research (under the auspices of the U.S. Department of the Treasury), was also named for him. The professor's sacrifice is generally held to be the primary reason that Dobbs County is no longer a desirable location for the undead.
