Familiar, Part 5

Familiar
Familiar

It happened almost as rapidly as the drug of an anesthesiologist. Duncan was about to reply when the room started spinning. All he knew at that moment was that he was falling.

Jim Duncan woke up feeling sick in what he thought was a hospital bed. There was no sign of Abigail. The room he was in was well-lit, and he quickly observed that he was in some kind of holding cell. He was strapped down, and he felt a bit of pain in his arm. There was a catheter in that area. The fluid looked like blood. Blood transfusion? He thought so.

For a few moments, he lay there, pondering his current situation. He remembered everything right up to the time that Abigail revealed that she had drugged the wine. What happened next? Did she feed on his blood? Did she bite him? He assumed so, but had no memory of the event. Perhaps he was, even now, a vampire. Perhaps the blood flowing into him was what was keeping him alive. With nothing else to do, he waited.

He did not wait long. In a few moments, a young woman entered with a cart. She checked the catheter and prepared another bag of fluid. Then, Abigail entered the room. She waited patiently while the other woman finished what she was doing. When she left, Abigail spoke.

"To answer your questions, yes, that is blood flowing through that tube. No, it's not the blood of normal humans. It is my blood, and it is keeping you alive. Don't fret: You haven't been bitten. You shall not be turned into a vampire, at least not right now. Perhaps someday, if we both choose it. The state of undeath is a gift."
