My assignments frequently require me to accompany the departed as they leave this world. Sometimes I have to defend the living. To have one recover, to live to see the next day, pleases me greatly. There are those who take pleasure in interacting with the souls of the departed. I do not, and I stand forever ready to defend those who are not yet ready to pass into eternity.
I picked up the phone with the nurse's call button on it. I spoke one last time, this time to the death angel who had frequently answered and interrupted Mrs. Adam's call. "Your duties are complete," I stated. "The family is returning to their home. You are not to interfere with them unless the Great Physician Himself requires it. It is appointed to mankind to die only once, and it is not time for Mrs. Adams to cross over."
I hung up the phone and retraced my path, heading to the ICU. Finding no one present who required my services, I dissipated. I am not saddened to find good health in a hospital. I am not unhappy when my services are not required. The next assignment will come soon enough.
The End
