In two short weeks, I observed as Mrs. Adams went from poor nutrition to sufficient nutrition. Then, one morning, I listened in on the doctors' counseling as they told Mrs. Adams that she had improved enough to go home. Later that day the hospital began to prepare discharge paperwork.
Mrs. Adams was released from the Evangeline Williamson Cancer Hospital at 6 p.m. the same evening. She and her husband discussed visiting a local pizzeria before they headed out: They were faced with a two hour drive from Dobbs City, and they would have a long drive without a meal unless they dined locally. After bidding farewell to several of the hospital staff (especially Angie, who had to hug Kristy), they went on their way, with Mrs. Adams enjoying pizza before settling in for the long ride home. She professed it to be the best pizza she'd ever had.
The Adams' left the hospital, but only after it was determined that Mrs. Adams required an additional drain tube. It was temporary, and would be removed at a later date. Mrs. Adams also had IV antibiotics, and she still had the temporary colostomy bag. For her, there would be a long road to perfect health.
As for me, I watched with something like joy as the couple left the hospital. I wished that I could enjoy their meal of pizza, but my duties were accomplished. I did, however, rejoice that Mrs. Adams was going home. I continue to wish her well.
