Samantha Varley was a recently divorced mother with a nine-year-old daughter named Emily. After a tumultuous divorce, Samantha decided to go back to school and get a degree. She earned an associate's degree at Dobbs Institute and then decided to pursue a career as a real estate agent. She got her license, and within her first year, she was named as the top agent in her company.
On her days off, Samantha enjoyed spending time with Emily. When they weren't at the park or getting ice cream, they spent their time at home. During those times spent at home, Samantha spent time at work (on her computer), and Emily played in her room.
Before long, Samantha began to hear voices from Emily's room. The girl laughed and giggled and could be heard speaking to someone. This was probably not uncommon for a 9-year-old, but Samantha thought she heard two girls giggling and having fun together. No other girl was in the house. Samantha listened closely and sometimes went to Emily's room to see what was going on. Of course, no one was present, though, once, Emily said, "Mom! You scared Esmeralda!"
"Who is Esmeralda?" asked Samantha.
"She's my friend," said Emily. "We play together in the closet."
