3820 - Chapter Three: The Kent Family - Page 1

Allan Kent
Allan Kent

Allan Kent, Part 1

Allan Michael Kent met Elisabeth Fields at a church camp, of all places. At that time, the young man, who had been raised in a strict Baptist home, participated fully in church and youth activities. The young Allan was nothing like the adult Allan. Eventually, his church activities dwindled, and then they ceased altogether. Allan didn't go to church, and neither did his family.

Elisabeth and Allan kept in touch during the times that they were apart, and in less than a year, Allan went to college in Brookston County. In another year, he and Elisabeth were married. Not long after this, they had a son, Mikey, and then two years later a daughter, Izzy. It was also around that time that Allan's son from a previous, failed relationship came to live with the young family. Allan didn't even know he had this son, but he welcomed Franklin Michael Kent with open arms; Elisabeth also accepted the boy.

Allan was pursuing a degree in engineering, but eventually became bored with school. Then his life's defining characteristic reared its head: He dropped out and took a position as an assistant city engineer for Dobbs City. He was soon fired after refusing to go on salary. He then found work at Quintet Class Foundries. It was a business that produced everything from manhole covers to the d-rings used by container ships.

At the foundry, Allan, who was diligent if restless, quickly came into a position where he was a safety inspection overseer. He was based out of Brookston County in the port of Riverhall, his hometown, but the foundry had companies inland and up and down the Texas coast. Eventually, Allan was assigned to 15 of Quintet's businesses.

As a safety supervisor, Allan was in a position that suited his preferred transient lifestyle. The job called on him to travel constantly, up and down the coast. Moreover, it didn't require him to get his hands dirty. Each plant had its own safety manager, and all Allan had to do was review the manager's report and place his initials beside the manager's name. It was a job that allowed for travel, good hotels, and almost a six-figure salary. Allan loved the job at first. Then boredom began to set in.

It wasn't too long before Allan began to search for ways to offset the boredom. He had no desire to return home and seek any sort of fulfillment in his family life. Instead, he turned to alcohol, and then, heroin.
