Allan Kent, Part 2
Allan had always been a low-key alcoholic. He was someone who had an "addictive personality," like his parents before him. Both of his parents had been secret alcoholics, pretending to be Christians, and it was speculated that they both entered the grave early because of it. Soon, Allan was spending time in bars. He'd always leave before he became too inebriated, but he'd always take a pint, or sometimes a six-pack, back to his room.
He could function while drinking, but one day after a rare staff meeting, he stumbled upon what would be his downfall: heroin. He learned to smoke heroin from an executive in the company. He then could not resist the euphoria that came with the drug and kept a supply of it wherever he went. He never progressed to injecting heroin, but that scarcely mattered concerning addiction. He was now a functioning alcoholic and heroin addict. Whenever he smoked, he was content. The boredom left him.
Allan's next addiction was women. He met women in every bar he visited, and many were addicts of various degrees. For those who were not addicted, many became so with Allan's help. Sex and drugs, along with the job, became the focus of his life.
His return trips to his home in Dobbs City became less frequent. Soon, they were rare. He just didn't care anymore. He'd found something new, and that's where his attention lay. It was his life's pattern.
When his daughter, Izzy, was six years old, Allan and Elisabeth separated and then divorced. It wasn't like they were a real family. The family unit had failed long ago. Izzy and Mikey stayed with Elisabeth, while Franklin went to live with his maternal grandparents.
