Libya, 2009
A group, bathed in the moonlight, was making its way up the Kaf Ajnoun, a mountain commonly known as the "Mountain of Ghosts" or "The Devil's Hill." Two party members, foreigners, had been assured that they were now in the area commonly known as "the cave of the Djinn." This corresponded exactly with the information given to the two men by their associates in the American CIA.
The trail began to grow steeper and rockier. Fortunately, the moon was full and bright, and the men were able to navigate easily, if not quickly. The cave they sought, according to the chief guide, known only as Abdul, was not too far away.
The group was a platoon of 15 men. Well, 12 men and the two westerners. The others were Bedouins. The foreigners did not know what tribe or clan they represented. All they knew was that Abdul had told them they were all Bedouins. Bedouin mercenaries, to be exact.
The American in charge of the group, one Robert Williamson, had been pleased when he first met the men. They were all well equipped and heavily armed, with AK-47 assault rifles slung over their shoulders. Also, each man was in possession of a holstered sidearm. Williamson didn't know or care what kind of pistols they carried. He and his countryman were unarmed, save for large Bowie knives they carried when they were on assignment.
At some point during the journey, the group passed through a lower area, still heading north. The moonlight revealed that they were travelling through a cemetery. Again, Abdul noted that the group was close, very close.
