Dobbs Institute, 16 Years Later - Tiffany Williamson, Part 11

"I was sent on a mission to the country of Libya to retrieve an artifact called the Trigon. You have not seen it yet. Moreover, we can't get it to work. But it is a device that, let us say, opens doorways. A secondary objective was to seek out and open a dialogue with a race of beings called ghouls. Not the monsters of myth, but an intelligent tribe of individuals. The hope was to secure their assistance in obtaining or at least using the Trigon. We really hoped to finesse a deal with them, something that would benefit both them and us. Unfortunately, it didn't happen."

"We traveled to this mountain - Kaf Ajnoun - and, leading our horses, made our way toward the summit. Again, we were there specifically to see if your tribe would be interested in becoming our allies. Unfortunately, we never got the chance. The mountaintop was desolate, its caves seemingly abandoned, although there was evidence that they were inhabited. There was no sign of any living being on the way there, only a lonely cemetery.

We quickly discovered that the cemetery had been vandalized. I sensed that we were in danger and that our errand would fail. I was sad. My heart was heavy as I thought about making our way back down the mountain and returning home empty-handed. I was thinking about my apparent failure when the world turned upside down.

Tiffany spoke. "I presume you couldn't find them?"

"No. We did make contact. I don't know what happened because I wasn't at the front of the party, but the ghouls and the mercenaries escorting me attacked one another. Twelve soldiers were slain, and a great number of ghouls must have been killed. Or perhaps they fled."

"I survived?" Tiffany spoke with interest, but not sadness or any other emotion. She was perfectly calm, even stoic.
