Dobbs Institute, 16 Years Later - Tiffany Williamson, Part 12

"You were an infant and the only survivor. I and my chief guide, Abdul, also survived. We lost one operative from the States. His body was recovered later. A ghoul woman also lived for a few minutes. I don't know much about her, but she told me her name: Zarqa al Ghul, which means Zarqa the Ghoul. Tiff, she was your mother."

"What can you tell me about my mother? Or father?"

"I don't know anything about your father or your tribe. But your mother...she was inhuman in appearance, Tiff, but she had a great command of the English language. She had long black hair, pale skin, and canine-like jaws. I'm sorry, but she struck me as being savage and animalistic. Had she been uninjured, I would have certainly been in grave danger. But her most outstanding feature was her eyes. She had the most stunning, glowing, blue eyes. You have her eyes. And you have her hair, also, when you don't color it. Incidentally, 'Zarqa' means blue."

"I don't know anything else about her, but she had been shot many times and did not survive for long. We discovered her in a cave. Members of your tribe did indeed live in that cave. I don't know how many. Your mother lived long enough to point me the way to the Trigon and to you. So, her last thoughts were for her daughter."

"I know," Dr. Williamson continued, "that she had some power to change her appearance. I couldn't see well in the dimming blue light, but she seemed to be in a state of mid-transformation when we spoke. I don't know what happened to the others; she was the only one we found." Williamson paused in thought, then decided not to tell the girl about her mother's hideous reversion to ghoul form.

"Since then, I've learned that ghouls are as much spiritual as they are physical. They are a race of djinn or genies who can take on various forms. We surely caught them off guard. There's no way that they would succumb to gunfire, I think, at least not when they are fully transformed. I don't know much more, if anything, about your mother. Just that she fell in battle."
