"No, Chris," said Izzy. "You can stay. Nothing I have to say is top secret."

"Okay, hun," said Chris. "Just asking."

"And Ethan, I know you're not pressuring me, babe," said Izzy. "Still, maybe you should know why I'm so weird about that place. No secrets between us. I know I don't talk about it much. It was a freaking disaster." Izzy closed her eyes and began to recount her childhood experience.

"It was after my mom and dad got their divorce; I don't know how long, exactly. We rarely saw Dad again, and Mom went to work for a realtor here in town. She had a habit of cleaning everything she considered to be dirty or organizing anything that she felt wasn't in the proper place. That's what she was doing that day."

"Normally, she left us with a sitter named Marie. But for some reason, Marie wasn't going to be home that day, and so Mom took us with her to her job. I can't remember much about how the house looked outside. But it was huge on the inside. I remember it being called Victorian. I didn't know what that meant at the time. I was like seven or eight years old, I think."

"Honestly, when we got to the house, I was bored. Then Mikey and I started to explore the house. Mom wouldn't let us go outside, so we ran around and around where she was working. Then we went upstairs. It was a two-story home with a basement. When you got to the top of the stairs, all the rooms were on one side. We ran up and down the hallway, occasionally ducking into one of the rooms, just goofing around."
