Amelia Anne Foster suddenly sat up. The room was ominously dark, and she realized she was resting in a four-poster bed. She could perceive a tiny amount of light. She then understood that the drapes were closed around the bed.
She opened the right-hand drape and saw a nightstand. It was empty save for an ewer, a covered drinking glass, and sunglasses. The bedroom had two windows, also on the right side of the room. The blinds did not completely impede all of the sun's rays, and Lucretia felt ill when she gazed at the light. Then she knew what the glasses were for - she put them on and felt some relief. She then discovered that the eyewear protected her eyes, but not her skin. She could not bear the sensation of light upon her body.
She retreated to the bed and closed its drape. She removed the glasses and realized they were designed for the April 8th, 2024, eclipse seen at various points throughout the United States. She sighed and pondered her next move.
She opened the drape on the left side, put the glasses back on, and got out of the bed again. She made her way to the door and grasped the knob. It was locked. She twisted the knob back and forth with no result.
