Today my wife had a 3 P.M. appointment for an MRI. She did well. Now I hope that it shows that nothing is wrong. Or some mild thing is wrong. I pray that it doesn't show anything cancerous, which has been my constant and private worry.
After we left the imaging facility (at 4 P.M.) we had to buy gas and do something unexpected. We were supposed to do a solo and minimalist Thanksgiving lunch. That's what we were prepared for, but our kids decided that they wanted turkey, after all. So, we had to search our small city for a turkey that could be cooked on short notice. A call to a popular barbecue restaurant revealed that they had smoked turkey breast - but they closed at 3 P.M., which was the same time as my wife's appointment. We ended up finding a smoked turkey at Kroger. It wasn't frozen when we got it, and it continued to thaw as we did other shopping. Right now, it's sitting in a bowl on top of my stove. My ham is cooking, and the stovetop gets quite hot. I checked the turkey a few minutes ago, and I think it's basically ready to go into the stove.
After departing Kroger, we ended up at the Temple of Walmart. There we had to buy a few odds and ends Christmas gifts. We also bought ingredients for my daughter, as she plans on making a couple of desserts. We have promised ourselves that we won't do this last minute shopping again. Turkeys and such things will be bought long before we need them at Christmas.
I bought a new Star Wars action figure at Walmart. It's Darth Maul. I really haven't had the time to look at the package yet. I've been too busy cooking dinner (creamed beef and biscuits) and getting the ham into the oven. When it gets done, I'll cook the turkey. As I often do, I'll probably get up at odd hours (thanks to my phone alarm) and keep an eye on the food's internal temperature.
Two days ago, I finished re-reading The Widowsfield Trilogy by A.R. Wise. I was reading it once a year and had fallen off. I think I'm going to read it one more time. It's a great series and will be reviewed in December unless you Google it first.
It's supposed to freeze tonight. This will be the first freeze of the year. I just came inside from putting a cover over the outside water faucet. It's not supposed to be a hard freeze.
Maybe I can stay up tonight and work on some more short fiction. Over the past couple of days, a new short story has been revealing itself to me. I'm not sure where it's leading yet, but it has grabbed my attention. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!
