Abe Tucker, Part 4

Abe Tucker
Abe Tucker

John bought his fence posts, which were loaded on his wagon. He also decided to buy some new hog wire fencing. When he was done and the wagon was loaded, he got ready to pay his bill. To his surprise, none other than Ned Smith - the owner - stood behind the counter to take his payment.

"I was sorry to hear about our mutual friend," said Ned Smith. "He was a good man and a good customer too. I guess I'll close early for the funeral. Will you and Mrs. Liz be closing as well?"

Something about the look on John's face told Ned that the man did not understand what he was talking about. "What funeral?" asked Mr. John.

"I'm sorry," said Smith. "I figured you knew. I'm talking about Abe Tucker. He died two days ago."

John drove home that day with a sense of dread and a troubled spirit. When he passed by the Tucker farm, he wouldn't even look in that direction. In fact, from that point forward, he rarely dared to look directly at the Tucker farmhouse. Fortunately, according to John himself, he never saw Abe Tucker again.
