Psychopompus, Part 2

Psychopompus
Psychopompus

Mrs. Adams was released to the ICU in critical condition and was treated on a 1:1 ratio by the nursing staff. Her nurse, Victoria, performed her duties admirably, rising above and beyond any reasonable expectation. Another young woman, a tech named Angie, likewise exceeded expectations. Angie was in nursing school, hoping to become a registered nurse. Mr. and Mrs. Adams were both of the opinion that she'd one day make a fine nurse. I also held a similar sentiment.

Mrs. Adams recovered enough to be released from the ICU. She was still in pain but was otherwise awake and aware. She was transferred from the ICU into the hospital's cancer hospital, known as the Evangeline Williamson Cancer Hospital. I observed the transfer as it took place.

In the C-Tower of Dobbs Memorial Hospital (Evangeline Williamson Cancer Hospital), the phone (room 424 on the fourth floor) with the nurse's call button seemed, in the opinion of Mr. Robert Adams, to have a mind of its own. I was present in the room when Mrs. Adams pushed the call button. She required her prescribed pain medications and informed the nurses that she needed help with the colostomy bag she was wearing. I heard the person on the other line answer her, but they didn't seem to be able to hear what Mrs. Adams was saying. The latter said, "This phone doesn't work. It sounds like whispering and sometimes screaming."

I quickly intervened. I got on the phone and got through to the nurse's station. I explained the situation and requested the pain medication. Then the call ended. A short time later, a young nurse came in to see what, if anything, was wrong. She agreed that the phone wasn't working the way it was supposed to work and made a note to inform maintenance.
