Psychopompus, Part 3

Psychopompus
Psychopompus

Mrs. Adams had a temporary colostomy bag due to the removal of the benign tumor, and it had begun to leak. The nurse had dealt with such situations, was friendly, and professed not to mind the trouble of changing out the bag. The smell, while unpleasant, was likewise not a concern to the professional caregiver.

The next morning, Dr. Austen came to advise Mrs. Adams. The doctor was beautiful yet stern-featured in her face. She promised that Mrs. Adams's surgical drain tubes (she was recovering from the emergency surgery) would soon be removed. She also stated that her other colleagues would occasionally visit Mrs. Adams. And so, it was. Mrs. Adams had all of the tubes removed.

The next day, Mrs. Adams was urged to consume more calories. Her intake was not sufficient. Mrs. Adams set out to accomplish this assignment forthwith. She consumed a few meals from the hospital kitchen, but, in the main, she depended on her husband to bring her such food as she desired. Chiefly, she preferred chicken, and Mr. Adams brought it to her whenever she desired it. This arrangement was both approved and recommended by Dr. Austen herself. I observed her as she consumed many meals that consisted primarily of chicken of all sorts.
