Journal, August 4

Journal

I was traveling through a town close to where I grew up. I passed an older building which had been renovated and turned into an Ace Hardware store. I remember when the building was once a grocery store called Piggly Wiggly. My aunt (mom's sister) worked there for many years. Once, when passing by that store, I saw my maternal grandmother coming out of the store. She was a big woman, and kind of walked side to side. She lived in Oklahoma City, but occasionally she'd come to Texas to visit her kids. It was the last time I ever saw her. Random memory.

My mom told me something that Granny had said one time. Or maybe it was my great-grandmother. Anyway, one of them said, "If you smell yourself, it means that someone else has been smelling you for two weeks." Very clever and very funny.

I've learned a lot from listening to elders. My dad once said (of some forgotten difficult task) that, "If it were easy, everyone would do it." He also taught me to look at the white stripe along the side of the road if the headlamps of oncoming traffic blinded me. He also admonished us to be careful when driving. "You know what you're doing, but you don't know what the other fellow is going to do." I still follow that advice, and also the advice of an old deacon who taught me not to get into a hurry. Work slowly and methodically. You'll get more done that way.

I've changed the cat litter boxes and loaded the dishwasher. Bought groceries for us and mom at Walmart. I still have to deliver them. We might take a road trip later. I'm still not sure about that, though.

Well, we didn't take a fun road trip. When we got in the car, it was sluggish in cranking. We took a not-fun trip to Walmart to get a new battery for the car. Ugh, more expenses that no one needs. On the bright side, I got my new glasses today.
