Nueva Almería
Sanchez had been disgusted by the slaughter of innocents at the Sun Tribe's temple. He was a hard man, but fair, and he could not stomach murders performed in the name of any god at all, let alone a pagan monstrosity. The new edifice that he ordered was to be the home of the next captain, or perhaps governor, who would take his place. It would cover that terrible area and hopefully be a blessing to the incoming leader, the leader's family, and the home country as well. All signs of the temple and the previous culture would be thoroughly erased.
Unfortunately, the incoming leader and his family did not experience any happiness in their new home. One morning, for no apparent reason, the entire family went missing. Not only this, but their staff and guards were also absent. No one was at fault. No one was blamed. The only oddity was discovered beneath the ground, where a basement was being excavated. It was filled with water.
Within six months, the mansion and the fledgling city around it were destroyed by other European invaders. The villa was set afire. In the morning, all traces of it were gone. The land lay fallow for many years. Few who lived ever knew about what had occurred in the murderous city, and the new European city was eventually turned into farmland.
These were the circumstances of the destruction of the Sun Tribe's temple and city, as well as the newer settlement founded by Sanchez. Then came the Mexicans, and then the Republic of Texas, and then the United States. No one knew of the former temple and the catacombs. No one knew of the sacred well. Life continued, as it always does.
No one remembers anything or anyone for very long. Walk through a cemetery. Dost thou know whose graves you walk over? No, you know not.
