Elisabeth's Loss, Part 4
A few days before one house showing, Elisabeth, who was accustomed to leaving Izzy and Mikey with a sitter, was disappointed to discover that the young lady was going to be unavailable when she was needed. Instead of trying to make other arrangements, she decided to take the children with her to the property. Together, they arrive at a five-acre property just south of the Dobbs City courthouse. The house being shown was a 1895 Victorian home, a mansion really, that had recently been listed. All three family members entered the home, and Elisabeth inspected the two-story structure.
While Elisabeth began to clean the kitchen and mop some hardwood floors, Izzy and Mikey did what children do: They played. They ran up and down the stairs and enjoyed life as children do. Before long, Izzy grew bored with the playing and joined her mom in the kitchen. Mikey still ran about, but finally took a seat at the top of the landing. He then got back up, laughed, and began running down the hallway, opening and slamming doors as he went. Soon, there was one final slam of the door. And then there was silence.
"Mikey?" called Izzy. "It's not funny, come out." There was no answer.
Elisabeth spent a few more minutes mopping and then cleaned the mop bucket.
