Elisabeth's Loss, Part 7
Elisabeth's irrecoverable depression and her death were taken by Allan and especially Franklin's family as proof of negligence, or even guilt, in the disappearance of Mikey. Their hostility influenced Franklin Kent to a great degree. The family despised Elisabeth for her perceived guilt. Franklin's disdain even extended to Izzy. He and his half-brother Mikey had been very close during the time they lived together, and he felt sure that Izzy either knew what happened to the boy or was somehow involved in his disappearance.
Within six months, for unknown reasons, the house in which Elisabeth Kent had spent so much time searching burned to the ground. The cause of the fire was never discovered. The lot was later purchased by the local college, Dobbs Institute.
In another year, misfortune struck the luckless Kent family again. Allan lost his life to addiction. It was a fate that anyone could have predicted, had he not concealed it so well. He was found lifeless in a hotel room after failing to make two scheduled visits to his company's safety officers. The police investigated, and an autopsy determined that Allan had perished as the result of a heroin overdose.
