The Village Idiot, Part 3

The Village Idiot
The Village Idiot

Natu's next lesson was teaching Tobar how to make arrow shafts and bows. He taught the boy everything he knew about bows and arrows, fishing spears, and how to use them. Again, the boy excelled. Then came the creation and repair of fishing nets. Finally, he was taught how to fish with a bow. Next on the agenda were the best places to fish and how to properly cast the nets. Tobar was like a sponge. He absorbed every lesson and mastered it.

Tobar and Natu spent almost every hour together, every day. They even began to dance in the village together. They delighted themselves in so doing and paid no regard to the odd looks and snickers. At some point, they began to disappear for days at a time, but they always returned with food for the village.

Two years later, around noon on an uncertain day, six bandits approached Seaside village. Several men of the village were slain. The chieftain and his family were captured and held in their home as hostages. The young unmarried women were taken into custody and locked in one of the homes.

Unfortunately, Natu and Tobar were dancing when the attack took place. Before they had time to react, Natu had been shot down in the street. The bandits then turned their bows toward Tobar. He escaped, running into the forest. No one was surprised to see him flee. What else would the idiot do?
